The cat ate my blog post....

Here I was writing a possibly quite boring post mainly, because I am British, moaning about the weather... ie it's flippin freezing... and twice, it has been destroyed by certain naked creatures descending on the keyboard and either closing the window or doing something unnecessary that switches the whole damn thing off.

(Gina is currently balancing over the keyboard with her hind legs on the desk and her front paws on my shoulders so I can't actually see what I am typing.... )

So I give in and will let them take over the blog....

This is my bed and my duvet, and I don't share!

P.S.A.....

No, not a Public Service Announcement, but more a Personal Stupidity Announcement..... and why my blog post last night didn't happen....

If you are very short sighted and showering without your glasses on, in the dark, when you hear something drop on the floor of the shower investigate first.... because 4 blade safety razors, without the guard on, are in fact not that safe.... and

(a) the soles of your feet bleed a lot, particularly when wet,
(b) blood is a complete sod to get out of the bathroom carpet, and
(c) it's very painful to walk when you've got four razor sharp cuts on the bottom of your foot.

No stitches required but putting my shoes on for work this morning was an experience I'd rather not repeat in a hurry

Taking time out......

My life has been a bit stressed out and frantic lately, particularly with family stuff and work... I've found myself sitting in front of a computer for up to 16 hours a day and the rest of the time either on the phone, or racing around doing stuff.  I was talking to my dad the other night who reminded me that sometimes it is okay to put myself first and to give myself some space and time.

So for the last 24 hours (ish - I was slightly later than I hoped starting last night) I switched off.  I have been technologically free..... that is to say, no internet, no pc at all in fact, no MP3 player, no radio, no TV, no phones (mobile or land line), no car, no Kindle and as little as possible of anything else that involves electricity.... the kettle was permitted this morning as caffeine withdrawal would not have made it the calm day I was hoping for.

I don't usually do silence so that has been quite a challenge, as was being still and not finding things that had to be done.  I've did allow myself a note pad and some paper, thinking I'd probably do some story planning or writing, but actually I found myself writing conciousness streams when the silence got too much outside my head and the sounds too much inside my head.  Reading them back they aren't pretty thoughts but they made me focus a bit more on my current state of mind and what I actually want out of life.

I lit the candles this evening in the lounge and the kitchen, did some knitting and generally lost myself in my thoughts. I've done a fair bit of crying too which I obviously needed.

I feel very calm and my head is certainly a lot clearer than it has been in months... so to round things off I am going for a nice long soak in the bath (with candles and bubbles) before getting into a nice bed with clean linens.

In need of sleep.....

This is obviously not really me!!
In the last 36 hours I have managed the grand total of 2.5 of them being asleep.... I know not why but last night was a complete farce.

I went to bed as usual and read for a while, then switched off the light and waited, and waited, and waited, and then at 1.30 am decided sod it, got up, took the kindle downstairs, let the dogs out and made a cup of tea.  I read at the kitchen table till 3.00 am when I decided I'd try to go back to bed... nope, no joy, neither my brain or my body wished to switch off, so I tossed and turned for a bit and gave up again, going back down stairs shortly before 4.00 am... I tried to curl up on the sofa and go to sleep, nope, not happening.. so at 5.00am I got up properly and took the dogs out to the park for half an hour.... it's nice on the park at that time of the morning, there were stars and moonlight.

When I got back I switched on the radio, made more tea.... and promptly fell asleep at the kitchen table... Luckily I'd set the alarm on my phone just in case and woke in time to go grab a very quick shower and get myself to work on time.... cos yes, working on that little sleep is a good idea.

I couldn't take my pain meds as I hadn't had breakfast, and then my back decided to bitch like hell at me about falling asleep at the table......then joy of joy, fire drill.... at which point my back kind of muttered at me, sure go stand outside in the freezing cold damp weather for half an hour, and then see if I'll co-operate.

So, feeling like I've been kicked by a horse and being stupidly over tired, I have taken the horrible mega strong painkillers and am waffling inanely on the blog whilst I wait for them to kick in..... I will get some sleep!

That midweek musical moment...

This is a song that they've been playing on the radio a lot of an evening whilst I've been writing recently and it's really grown on me rather a lot....

Safety 'net.....

Good news.... mum has a strangulated hernia....... yes, I did say good news, the other option was that it was a tumour, so whilst this may involve fairly major surgery (keyhole not an option as it's deep in scar tissue).. it's fixable.

Whilst all this has been going on I have been reminded again that I have some fantastic friends, particularly my online friends..... who shall henceforth be known as my Safety 'Net.  Over the last week they've offered me lots of support and then this morning I got up to find I had texts, direct messages and e-mails, then two particular friends kept in contact all morning whilst I waited whilst mum was in with the surgeon... though the conversations were getting wilder by the minute, culminating in a wonderful comment from my little net sister that she was enjoying her vision of me in a chauffeur's uniform, including hat...

Said comment was followed shortly by an order that I get myself down to her house for coffee, chocolate and cuddles ... which being a good girl (yes, I know, that subject is still very much up for debate) I did.  We had a nice (late) lunch out and then spent a lot of time talking, sometimes serious, sometimes complete trash... there was some gentle nagging about submitting my book, there was much pleading that I get my finger out and write some more, and then there was the whole very silly conversation about how I couldn't be a good girl because of the special "bedtime stories" that I'd written for her in the past and when was I going do do some more of those ... and then we got onto the subject of strange porn, and in particular fish porn.. which I have no idea where that came from, but now feel I may have to do something about... mermaids possibly ... though the porn version of Finding Nemo is making me snicker....

Anyway, I am feeling very happy and loved tonight, particularly as I have had hugs - which as a very tactile person is something I miss out on hugely having no partner and my friends not being on my immediate doorstep.

one of those bits and pieces posts....

I do have a couple of "proper" posts of things that I've been thinking about recently that want to get down in the near future, but tonight is not a night for particularly coherent thoughts, and a sneaky week night vodka and Pepsi max didn't help!

So instead, some random mumbling from the recesses of my over caffeinated brain....

- the ear phones finally turned up last night... I switched off the pc and wandered through to the bedroom just after 11 pm and there they were in the middle of the bed... I tried cross examining the cats, but the insist it wasn't them - we obviously have a magical black hole that can make earphones disappear from the stairs only to reappear 10 days later on the bed.........

- This evening I have finished writing a contract for frozen/chilled semen exportation ... I take on some very strange favours for my friends.....

- my working day today has very much been a "Monday"... we are approaching a financial quarter end, and the next one after this is the big one .. year end.. when every single person who has a target to meet will be screaming at those of us responsible for making sure the money comes in ... I did ask my team leader today if I made target before year end could I give up working and write instead ... ok, she is one of my beta readers/naggers... apparently as much as she'd like me to get on with the 2nd instalment of the book she's read she doesn't think those higher up the food chain will approve.... Monday-ness was not helped by having to format and proof read a 160 page legal document... hell I'd written the damn thing and couldn't work out what the hell I was meant to be saying at times.....though I do find it amusing that I can easily spell huge big long legal words and fail miserably to spell the short words.

- To combat the feeling of overwhelming panic about mum's hospital appointment tomorrow I might have accidentally have downloaded more books onto the kindle... I must stop this... though as I get 2 months off paying housing tax the temptation is to spend the money that would have gone to the tax man on books....

Ok, enough waffling, time to go lurk elsewhere on the net until I remember what being tired feels like...

Research... the old fashioned way...

Today has been one of relaxing and reading... Whilst there was some lurking in the corner of the sofa with the Kindle I had initially intended to spend a fair bit of time on the net looking up some bits and pieces for a story challenge... one I really have no excuses not to do seeing as I actually set the challenge!

Then my internet connection failed...... and the broadband.... and my phone... and my smart phone did the whole "you have no more minutes this month unless you want to pay a fortune" thing so that got switched off too.

So I went back to basics... and to real books.... which given what I was researching meant big heavy old hard back books, the ones with the thick paper and that special sort of crinkle to them.  Now, okay, these are my books and I dabble in them fairly frequently, but normally just to clarify what I want... not this time, I wanted a whole new set of information and had a wonderful time.  Time passed so quickly whilst I was reading and my challenge story is taking shape quite well.... though not sure I will get it to under 1000 words (hell what am I talking about, this is me, the completely ocd side of me will demand it's exactly 1000 words).

My head is now quite scarily full of strange ideas and stories, which may cause some strange dreams as a lot of today's research involved demons and folklore, with a few bits of superstition and history thrown into the mix..... luckily I have my notepad and pen tucked away in the bedside table just in case the ideas demand to be written in the middle of the night!

In which there is 24 hours with a social life...

I have some fantastic and wonderful friends, both online and off.  In view of my plea for distraction they have jumped up and taken the challenge...

Last night I was taken out to the pub and then went to a midnight screening at the cinema (person I went with is one of my adopted little sisters, and though we flirt like mad I am also occasionally mistaken for her mother (she's 15 years younger - and scarily her father once asked me out!).  I blame the alcohol and scary movie for a moment of straying hands which we both looked a bit sheepish about when we came out of the cinema)

This morning there was the usual run of housework, shopping and laundry, but then some friends who I don't see often texted to say they were passing through on the way on to a fet night and could we go for early dinner... so off I went... which was great fun as though I've spoken on line to two of them fairly recently I've not seen any of them for ages.... I think our conversation might have scared the family on the next table though.

I'm afraid I distracted myself further by downloading a couple of books to read this evening - must stop picking long series of books to read ... it's just an excuse to by them all...

Not sure what tomorrow will bring, but tonight I am feeling extremely distracted, quite well hugged and loved by my friends.

In need of a distraction.......

We were hoping for mum's test results today, and in an unusual streak of optimism I had been telling myself that they were just going to phone and say that the tests showed nothing, no problems, all is well...... only they didn't.  Instead I got a phone call this evening asking if I could take Tuesday off work and take mums to the hospital as she has an urgent appointment with the Consultant Surgeon........ and see the pessimism clang down like a heavy fog over everything.

Hugo is practising his worried look too!
I am going to try not to brood and worry...... oh who am I kidding, I am going to wind myself up something stupid, whittle like hell, paint all the worst case scenarios and panic like the end of the world is imminent..... whilst at the same time keeping it together and putting on a brave face for mums and my sister.....

I need to find something to distract me for the next few days...............though my best friend has also told me failing that she will just bitch slap me until I pull myself together!  She means well really!

Midweek musical murmuring

I think my recent bouts of insomnia have finally caught up with me as sometime around 7pm I appear to have fallen asleep on the sofa this evening... and having only just woken up again my body is screaming at me to go back to sleep, which I intend to do in the company of this lady (in a musical accompaniment kind of way only if you get my meaning)....

Sitting on my hands.....

I am in that difficult situation of having to sit on my hands and not type a response I'd like to to a comment on a thread on the Goodreads YA LGBT group... I didn't think it bothered me, turns out, after 24 hours or so of thinking it through.. you know what, actually it does....

The book of the month for February looks like, for the first time, being a F/F one rather than an M/M one - which given that the group is all inclusive should be fine.  Ok, I appreciate that some may not have read an F/F book before, may feel a bit iffy about it, or may sit out .... that's up to them.... though as it's YA it's not going to be explicit or possibly do anything but fade out an implied incident.

What I didn't expect was a comment as follows:  "Lesbians make me nervous"

Now because I couldn't leave it initially I responded by saying that as a lesbian I wasn't sure how to take that (and pointed out that I don't think I'm particularly scary).... now the original poster clarified that he didn't mean to offend, and well, no, he didn't because if lesbians make him nervous that's a personal statement not a ground for offence and then went onto explain that basically the only lesbians he knew were quite fierce butch ones  (as an aside - I did point out that some butch type lesbians actually make me nervous... but probably not in the way he means!  that said groups of children hanging about on street corners make me nervous, straight men in bars make me nervous)

Anyway, someone else then responded that maybe only the fierce ones felt safe (in that particular area) being out enough to be recognised .....and this is what has got me thinking WTF and wanting to respond...... "recognised" sorry.. do we have to have some sort of sign on us to enable us to be recognised in public settings?  I didn't think we were going down the route of having to identify your sexuality by your appearance... hell just stick a label on someone why don't you so you can "recognise" them if they don't fall into the "oh you must be a lesbian because of the way you look" category!

Unsurprisingly I know a fair few lesbians, only a very small percentage of which could be described as butch - many of which are what actually very young just out lesbians who aren't fierce at all... but you know what, most of the rest of us look just like, well, most other females you come across.....

Not being funny... but if someone had suggested that it was a pity that only effeminate gay men had the confidence to be out and "recognised" I am sure someone would have made noises about it.......

As much as I'd like to stand up and point out that actually the comments are giving people perhaps the wrong idea about stereotyping and labelling, I can't help but feel that the location of the thread would be inappropriate for me to start what would be really a mini rant...... though then again, any young lesbian coming across it may be put off..... argh, I wish I could decide what to do for the best, until then I shall go back to sitting on my hands......

Mumblings on the Happily Ever After

One of my closest friends and I have a lot in common, not least of which is our love of books, in fact we got to know one another through an internet forum dedicated to a particular author.  That said, we both have quite wide ranging tastes and they don't always mesh.

The main example of this is the whole topic of romance fiction and in particular the happily ever after (she finds my obsession with M/M fiction hysterically funny for some reason - save for using the book covers to freak out her 17 year old daughter (who is also by her own choice my half daughter).  Her Aspergers syndrome/Autism means that she doesn't do the whole icky relationship thing and show her a cover with a half naked man on it and she'll run screaming ).

Now whilst my friend is (now - it's not always been that way) the happily married mother of three and I am the cynical single lesbian with a track record on relationships that would raise a few eyebrows, it's actually me that is the secret hopeless romantic who likes the books that finish "and they all lived happily ever after".

I did ask her earlier on if she could explain why... but as she has a toddler, two teenagers, husband, 2 dogs, several cats and a knitting habit worse than my own she could only manage a short summary...

"In a nutshell: cos that's not how life EVER works out, and the end of a book is NOT the end of the story."

Ok, now this is fair enough, and yes I suppose in real life any relationship doesn't just go on forever with no bumps in the road, but I'd like to believe that some relationships will go the distance and everything will work out.  I also know the end of a book isn't the end of the story, well it is, unless the author can be pestered for more - but, hell, I'm the one who in unguarded moments can find myself sitting there suddenly wondering 'I wonder what so and so from whatever book is doing now' and then let my imagination drift and before I know it in my mind I've a picture of "what happened next"... and you know what, it's nearly always a happy ending - see told you, hopeless romantic.

The thing is, 99% of the time, I can keep myself grounded to knowing that fiction is fiction, and whilst real life may occasionally smack you in the fact with the unexpected I am happy for my reading to be, well, if not by genre at least by the standards of my life, fantasy.....  Maybe this is what gives me a glimmer of hope that one day I will find a happily ever after of my own.

Bribery works...

As I was bemoaning last night that this weekend I had to do my assignment rather than actually having a weekend it was none too subtly pointed out to me that it was entirely my own fault that it was over due, that I deserved no sympathy for it, that I was well aware when the deadline was and that there was no reason that I had missed it....... that will teach me to whine

So this morning there was a promise, that if I did the assignment without whining or procrastinating I would be allowed treat.... yes, it's a well known fact bribery works (or in dog training terms - positive reinforcement through reward based training)

The assignment is done, save for a couple of bits of tidying up I needed the net for and didn't dare use whilst I was doing the assignment because I would be too easily distracted.

Anyway, apparently I did enough of it to warrant my reward, it's only a little thing, but for the first time in about 4 months I have ice cream .... which I am now off to enjoy, in bed...

Random act of kindness

By home time this afternoon my weekend plans had kind of been shot to bits, I was meant to go visit my little net sister tomorrow, but she has to go work, and not even at a time when I can visit round, oh no.  Then I got an e-mail from my tutor gently reminding me that my criminal law assignment was overdue (grumble, grumble, moan, whine, what do I need a professional qualification for anyway) which means that tomorrow I will finish the thing and get it submitted.

So, by the time I nipped into the petrol station come mini supermarket thing on the way home I wasn't overly delighted with the world.

I filled up the car and went and picked up a few bits and pieces to get me through the assignment (I find that ice cream helps these things - yes even if it is about -5 out there at present).  When I got to the checkout there was one person in front of me who was just finishing up.  Anyway, a bloke came in with cash just to pay for petrol so, because my parents bought me up to have manners and also because he looked a bit flustered, I let him push in in front of me.

He smiled said thanks and I thought nothing more of it.  He paid and then turned round, smiled and said thanks... and then handed me a small bunch of daffodils that he'd picked up from the flower display next to the till.

The daffodils are in a bright yellow mini bucket that doubles as a vase on the kitchen windowsill and I am all happy and touched that someone did that just because I let them queue jump

It is sometimes the little things that can make you feel a huge amount better about stuff.

Tightly coiled spring impersonation....

Since Saturday, apparently unsurprisingly to those that know me, I've been getting myself slowly more and more wound up about things that I cannot change.... in this case mum and her lump...

Tuesday, she met the Consultant and the nursing team, and today she had the scan..... and she won't get the results for probably a week......

I cannot hurry the results, I cannot change what ever the results are, I cannot in fact do anything save wait and be patient .... yeah, right, instead I have been getting more and more wound up about it, wanting to do, well, something, anything.... it reached the point this evening where I have just been informed that I am being a right royal pain in the neck and that I need to pull myself together and get a grip... it was also pointed out that I need to do this now rather than wind myself up further for the next seven days as my work is suffering (and my assignment is still not done) because my concentration is shot to hell...I've also been horribly snappy and rude (there will be apologies tomorrow)

So, when I've read the riot act to Gina and Hugo - who have destroyed 2 toilet rolls in 2 days (and these things do not grow on trees) and have yet to confess as to the whereabouts of my headphones - I have strict instructions to take myself off to bed and stay there till the alarm (ok, well Ivan) goes off tomorrow.....

Midweek Music

Today I have had the fidgets, and whilst I worked there was chair dancing and possibly even some singing along to the MP3 player as I drafted .... though hampered by the fact that I had to use the emergency ear phones as I still haven't managed to locate the usual ear phones after Hugo stole them last night... I've checked all his usual hiding places and can only assume that he (and possibly Gina) have eaten the damn things...

And because I have given in to the whole insomnia thing I finally got up the courage to read Hot Head (which was the book that I was holding off reading as I was worried that I'd not enjoy it as much as the hype said I should).

Anyway, today has been a folk-ish tunes kind of day so I thought I'd share a couple of the tunes that made the day go that little bit faster....

Attack of the Vampire Bunnies.....

Not really, an out of control plot bunny maybe!  My plot bunny (he goes by the name of Rupert, originally from Australia but with a keen sense of adventure.  He's been with me for about 10 years after he hitched a ride from Platform 14 of Manchester Piccadilly Station one wet and windy Sunday afternoon as I made my way back home after a weekend away.  Since then he has whispered at me, nagged me and argued long and loud with the characters in my head about what they are going to do next) bit quite hard, but oh so subtly about six weeks ago.... normally he's not a big one for subtle but this time there has been a slow gradual build of whispering too me...

it started with this picture...
(and normally I am so careful not to let him access the net)...

Anyway, green eyed girl is a cat shifter (domestic cat - which makes her a Class 2 shifter (Class 1's are high prey drive animals, Class 2 are domesticated carnivores and Class 3 the harmless fluffy things mainly) who is currently sulking and refusing to change back into human form as her parents have ripped her away from her home and friends to move to the other end of the country.

The blindfolded girl is an elemental... my preference is for a fire elemental but the bunny is chanting Earth at me.... she is none to happy as her girlfriend dumped her at the beginning of the summer holidays, her best friend who lived next door has moved away and her parents are constantly fighting...

Misery loves company as you know....and cats are attracted to the body heat of a human (or not quite human), particularly a fire (or earth apparently) which are a degree or two warmer than a "neutral" (non elemental/shifter/fae type) and a lot warmer than either water or air elementals (water elementals particularly, when they get annoyed they freeze things...)

I have some thoughts about where the plot of this is going, ably assisted by this photo I found.....

I may give in on this one and just let the bunny and the character guide me and see what happens....

I have blisters.....

I think that breaking in new shoes should actually fall somewhere inside the Geneva Convention on torture...

Today I have tried this... admittedly a whole day at work in them as a first attempt might not, in hindsight, have been a good idea... they did remain on my feet till I got out the office (though that was a struggle) but I'm afraid the walk from the office to the car park, the drive home with the mad dash round the shop were done barefoot.

Thank goodness it's unseasonably warm and the pavements were dry (I could at this point tell you of a very drunken night as a student when a friend an I in a quest at 3 am to get pizza walked round most of the town barefoot - we had it figured if we were stopped by the police we'd just tell them we were doing a dissertation on the temperature and surface texture of pavement surfaces at night...)

So, I am going to take my sore feet and soak them in the bath whilst reading the SmutKindle and trying to persuade the cats not to join me....

A song about new shoes being a wonderful thing... like the song, don't agree with the lyrics...

Scared....

Right now I don't know whether to laugh hysterically, cry or rant at the universe.  I've spent the last 24 hours trying to get my feelings sorted in my head but I am just going round and round in circles here.

I am so fucking scared.

I went to mum's yesterday for coffee and as we sat nattering and doing the crossword she calmly announces that she found a lump in her stomach before Christmas and that last week whilst she was at the doctors she got them to look at it. They are concerned enough that she goes into hospital for an urgent scan and testing on Tuesday.

Now part of me is optimistically hanging onto the fact that where the lump is is close to the site where she had her appendix out, and gall bladder, and it could just be scar tissue... nope, not hanging onto that optimism very well... a huge great clanging part of me is seeking only blackness and the words "tumour" and "cancer" in front of me....

Then she goes on to tell me that she's not alone, as my sister's last routine gynae exam has shown irregular results and she too is going into hospital for further tests in the next week.....

I will be strong, and support them and help them, but this is my family, I don't want them to be ill, I don't want to loose them, I can't do this.....

Alas poor squirrel,,,,

Ivan obviously decided this morning that a fresh out the fridge chicken wing was not as biologically appropriate raw food as he'd like.... so, whilst walking there was a minor case of

    V

The tree rat lost........  breakfast for Ivan was very biologically appropriate and definitely raw

I pretended I didn't know him until I got to the exit to the park........

A Friday bits and pieces post...

I am a bit broken... we had really high winds the other night and the mob decided that every bang or crash outside was someone trying to burgle the house... so I got naff all sleep after midnight, and as I'd only gone to bed at 11 pm, well yes... then it was miserable, damp and revolting weather wish so my joints ganged up on the rest of my body and decided to strike... by the time my boss got into work at 8.30 am I'd texted to say that whilst I was at my desk and working it would be best to ignore me, save for throwing regular coffee at me, as I was probably going to get very sarcastic, stroppy and that there may be swearing ..... Luckily as I was working rather than being at home where I really probably had every right to be they were very good about the ignoring save for coffee thing.

Today has been better.. though I have learnt two things..... firstly, bursting out laughing at something you are reading in a file is all very well and good... until someone asks you what you are laughing at... ok, now what I was laughing at was that the trainee had put in a document that "the explosion occurred without warning whilst he was undertaking the rim job".... and the picture that actually flashed through my mind was nothing like what had actually happened....yeah, no, I didn't explain why I found that funny...

The other thing I learnt...... when you get in the lift, it helps if you press the button to move to the floor you want to go to.. lifts cannot read your mind... and standing in them for three minutes wondering why they aren't moving, then pressing the button to contact security thinking it's broke is, well, somewhat embarrassing particularly when security, who have explained to you in words of one syllable why the lift isn't moving whilst trying not to laugh at you, are on the floor you are going to and you have to walk past them......

but hurrah, it is now the weekend, and I shall, oh, I was going to say relax but I've just looked at the diary and my next assignment is due on Monday.... guess I'd best do that then!

Great Expectations...

No I'm not going to talk about Dickens.... and I've never been able to consider the serious portrayal of Miss Haversham since reading Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next books... well you wouldn't if you see her in your mind racing the car against Toad of Toad Hall...

As anyone whose read this blog will know, I read anything, seriously, if it's got words on it, put it in front of me and I'll read it (ok, if it's instructions, or say a recipe I might not do what it suggests, but I will read it) ... the thing is whilst I might read some books I might not actually enjoy them... despite what friends who recommend them, or reviews I've read suggest.

As an example, some friends rave about them, but I don't like the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey, which as I do read a lot of fantasy I probably should like them, I've tried reading them but no, doesn't happen for me... though I think this maybe because I just don't do dragons (and get very annoyed with the fact that some fantasy authors only seem to think it is proper fantasy if there is an obligatory dragon in it, even if it serves no real purpose).

As a completest I keep buying books in a series as they come out even if I find the odd book that doesn't quite do it for me (I got very concerned that one of my series, the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett, were going this way after reading Unseen Academicals, but thankfully it's just a one off and it got back on track with both the last Tiffany Aching book and then Snuff - though I do wonder with his illness how long he and his assistant Rob can keep going).

Sometimes it's not a weak book in a series, or a bad thought out plot, take the Harry Potter books, I enjoyed reading them I found after the fourth book I was tempted to get out the red pen and go through editing to tighten up the story (don't start me on halitosis suffering sparkly vampires, really, no, just no).

Which leads me after a long winded waffle to the point of the post... on Christmas day, in my excitement at being the proud owner of SmutKindle and some vouchers I bought those books that had been at the top of my wish list to read but which I refused to pay a fortune for the paperbacks for... and a couple of them are still sitting on the kindle unread despite the fact that I have since bought yet more books (hurrah for free books and ones of under £2).... the only reason for this is that I am worried I am going to be disappointed by  them having read rave reviews just about everywhere I have built up in my mind that these books, and one in particular, are going to be wonderful....and I don't want to be disappointed, I probably won't be, but in the back of my mind there is this nagging feeling that I might not get the enjoyment out of the story I am expecting.

I should just bite the bullet and read the damn things!

Nostalgic Midweek Music...

My friends, who know me far too well, frequently feed my shower gel addiction (erm, there might have been about 9 new bottles for Christmas)... anyway, this morning I cracked open a new bottle (hell I'd been back at work a whole day and felt the need to treat myself - what do you mean, but there are already 4 open bottles in the shower??).  Anyway, by the time I'd used said shower gel I was getting some lovely fuzzy flashbacks from the smell to a rather wonderful night a long long time ago involving some games with vodka and cinnamon sticks (never underestimate the kitchen for interesting things to play with)

All day I've been on a bit of a nostalgia trip, particularly as every damn time I catch the smell of said shower gel I have been trying to stop blushing

So, whilst I go reminisce some more, two songs which take me back to around the same sort of time ...

A silly little post.......

In the three and a bit years I've been in my current job I have had one keyboard, it has been broken in lovingly and is perfect

It has survived floods (me spilling coffee on it mainly), earthquakes (me dropping files on or next to it), foreign invasions (me dropping things like staples, paper clips etc into it.... see it's a much more resilient keyboard than the one on my lap top, in which the ctrl key lost the battle with the nail clipping from the dog that got under it... and yes, I have learnt my lesson and make sure it's shut before I do the dogs nails now). It even survived repeated attempts by Facilities to remove it on the grounds that because the little white letters have rubbed off the black keys .. why yes, I have a funky keyboard, the background is silver...apparently not having legible letters breaches health and safety or some such nonesense (like I need the letters, I touch type, hell I'm sitting in the book room in the dark typing this)

But alas, today it met it's match as an avalanche of cous-cous salad arrived suddenly over it, a direct result of trying to type one handed whilst eating lunch and accidentally catching the lunch box and sending it flying.  I tried to resurrect it, but I fear Facilities were already on the look out as when I asked for air spray, anti bac and other cleaning things they magically arrived, pronounced it dead and took it away.

I shall miss that keyboard....... I might have accidentally written most of my first novel using it (but we won't mention that to work)

January Short story....

Ok, trial run time again (and this time as my usual beta reader/cheer leader/hand holder is on holiday with added nerves!)

The photo prompt....

I was almost bouncing in the seat as the coach pulled into the station. Catching sight of him through the rain, standing on the pavement beneath the black umbrella, the fluttering feeling in my stomach exploded, like a million butterflies would erupt from my throat as soon as I opened my mouth.

I’d spent a lot of time on the two hour journey remembering New Years Eve, the night we’d met.

Until that night I had always considered that I’d been unlucky.  I mean, take my genetic makeup for example, it was as if, should there was a supreme creator who decides these things, then they were really having a bad day when I was conceived, as evidenced by the fact that I have so far struggled through my life as a short sighted, heavily freckled, ginger haired, gay computer geek.

Whilst I’d ditched the milk bottle glasses for contacts at 15, around the same time I came out to my family and friends, the ginger hair remained the bane of my life.  I got far more grief over being a ginger than I did over being gay, particularly at school.  It didn’t help that I was tall and skinny, preferring books and computers to sports.

I was about thirteen when I’d realised I preferred boys over girls, but it took another two years for me to become comfortable enough with this knowledge before I shared it with anyone else.  The core group of my school friends, my fellow computer nerds if you will, more or less just accepted my coming out without comment, but gossip spreads, no matter how careful you are about who you tell, and before long it was pretty common knowledge at school.  Even then the taunts were usually along the lines of me being the four eyed ginger nut.

All this probably also goes some way to explain why, at the age of 18, I spent New Year’s Eve at my great aunt Mabel’s 80th party in the local church hall, rather than out clubbing with my friends.  Well, no probably not, because really clubbing isn’t really something my friends and I go in for, and if I hadn’t gone to the party I’d probably be on my own, sitting in front of the computer in my bedroom.

Family occasions when I was younger were fun, running around with my cousins high on too much fizzy pop and sweets until we crashed out in a corner, usually where the coats had been abandoned.  As I’d got older though I’d rebelled against having to attend yet another boring family do, one in which I would no doubt end up bickering, and possibly fighting, with those self same cousins I’d once played with.  I had tried to argue with my parents that I would be happy to spend New Year’s Eve at home, that all my friends, well the virtual ones, would be on line and I could see the New Year in with them. When my skills at persuasive argument failed to impress I attempted humorous sarcasm and finally resorted a bout of teenage sulking, but mother put her foot down for once and insisted.

The weather forecast had threatened a frosty night, but by nine o’clock the hall was crowded and uncomfortably warm, a buzz of chatter clashed with the drone of easy listening background music someone had put on the stereo.  After I’d done the obligatory rounds to say hello to everyone, and in an effort to avoid the inevitable questions about how college was going and whether I had found a girlfriend yet, the older generation preferring to think my being gay was a phase I was going through, I’d grabbed a couple of bottles of beer from the drinks table and slunk to the far end of the hall.  For a second I thought about slipping out the emergency exit but catching mum’s eye, and the sharp shake of her head when I went towards the door, I slumped down onto the steps that led up to the curtained off stage area; content to drink alone with just my own thoughts on what a miserable time I was having for company.

I’d almost reached the bottom of the second bottle and was beginning to get a bit of a buzz when I got a prickly sort of feeling, as though I was being watched.  Looking up I expected to find myself subject to the disapproving glare of one of the parental units, disappointed at my anti-social behaviour once again. It wasn’t. My cousin Lily, the closest in the family to me in age, was walking purposefully towards me, with her a girl and boy of about the same age, neither of which I recognised.

“Hi cuz,” Lily’s eyes sparkled with mischief and I pulled myself to my feet to meet her head on.  We’d turned from inseparable allies as kids into bitter enemies during our early teens, when our respective parents had resorted to keeping us at opposite sides of the room when ever we met.  We’d called a truce more recently, the pair of us growing up at last, much to our family’s relief.

“Lily,” I countered, raising my bottle in a mock salute.

“These are my Uni friends, Sam, who I am in halls with and his sister Jules, they’re staying for the holidays as there parent’s are skiing.  Guys, this is my cousin Aiden.”

“Hi,” Sam stepped forward and offered his hand to me. “I’m her pseudo-boyfriend for the duration.”

“Her what?” I stuttered as I took hold of his hand.  His face was framed by short, artfully messed, hair which not as bright red as my own was definitely ginger.  Brown eyes sparkled at me as he raised his eyebrows.  I just stared, he was extremely cute.

“Pseudo-boyfriend,” he repeated with a huge grin, not letting my hand go or breaking eye contact.  It was probably only for a few seconds that we stood there but it felt like longer, with the curse of the fair skinned I could feel heat rising in my face as I blushed beneath my freckles.

“I need to talk to you,” Lily’s words finally broke the connection.  With a glance round the room she flitted quickly up the steps and behind the thick dark blue velvet curtains of the stage. Sticking her head back round she hissed at us, “Come on, quickly.”

It was very dark behind the curtain, light seeping in round the edges from the main hall.  With no seating we settled onto the stage, Sam sitting to my left with Lily and Jules opposite. I frankly stared as Jules reached out and pulled Lilly closer to her and then looped her arm round her shoulder.  Lily lent into her for a second then pulled herself up straight but not out of Jules’ embrace.

“Pseudo-boyfriend, do you get it now?”  Her question held something of a challenge.

“I, erm...” To give myself time to think before I replied I lifted the bottle to my lips only to discover it was empty.  Setting it down in front of me before I continued, “Yeah, I get it Lils, your gay too.”

“Well, kind of, I’m bi,” she admitted with the hint of a grin the challenge in her expression fading.

“Since when?” the question seemed to fall out of my mouth before I thought about it, what the hell did it matter how long?

“Not that long,” she acknowledged her smile widening as she turned to look at Jules. “It came as a bit of a surprise to me too.  I hadn’t really ever thought about it and, well, Jules came to visit Sam earlier in the term, it just kind of happened.  We’ve been together for about three months now.”  She shrugged as she finished speaking.

“Have you told your parents? I mean, they must know....” I looked between the three of them as the light suddenly dawned.  “Ah, pseudo-boyfriend, your parents think you’re going out with Sam?”  I didn’t know whether to feel annoyed or upset by her deception, I mean, it wasn’t exactly fair on Sam.

“Yes,” Lily looked at the floor as she continued. “It was easier this way, I wasn’t ready to tell them, I, well, heard stuff, I mean, when you...”

“What stuff?”

“The family,” she continued to study the floor for a while before raising her eyes to meet mine.  “When you came out,” she continued with a sigh.  “I know your parents were fine with it, but, well mine, and some of the others, particularly the aunts, they, well, weren’t very nice about it.”

“Not nice?” I hissed.

I stared at Lily, shocked by her words. I had always felt like I had had the easiest coming out possible, certainly compared to some of the stories I’d heard from other gay friends or that I’d read about online.  I hadn’t planned to come out when I did, it just kind of happened.  There we were enjoying a family Saturday evening, sitting in the lounge watching TV and as the credits to Dr Who started I just blurted it out.

My parents had been fantastic, not making a big issue of it, telling me that it was fine and that they loved me, and that was it.  I am not sure how the rest of the family found out, though I strongly expect that my mother told most of them herself, knowing her to show that she was proud of me and that I had her support.  I’d never heard anything negative from the family and I wondered if my parents had shielded me from that or whether it was something they knew nothing of either.

In the silence I felt a warm hand reach offer and take hold of mine, giving it a gentle squeeze but not letting go. The anger that had been building seemed to fade away, as though that simple gesture offered me support.

“I’ll go get us some more drinks,” Jules rose to her feet as she spoke, “you two both on beer?”  I nodded and assumed Sam did too, I didn’t look away from Lily.

“No,” she said eventually. “My parents aren’t like yours.  I, well, daren’t, not yet anyway.  I want to, but, I’m just not ready.”

“I’m not the first in the family, if rumour is to be believed?”  I reminded her.

“I know,” Lily nodded.

The family legend was an old one.  Lily and I shared a maternal grandmother whose youngest sister, Dora, had, during the war, taken in a woman lodger whose own home had been destroyed by enemy bombing. After peace was declared and Dora’s husband Eric was demobbed her lodger, Agnes, didn’t leave and for a while the three of them shared the house.  A few years later Dora and Eric divorced, causing a family scandal all by itself, and she and Agnes lived together for the rest of their lives.  Most of the family believed that they’d fallen in love during the war and remained together as a couple, though some did try and argue they’d just been friends.

“Fair enough,” I conceded, telling people had to be Lily’s decision.  “For what it’s worth, you’ve got my support.  I’m not so happy with the pseudo-boyfriend thing though.” I admitted glancing back at Sam who still held onto my hand.

“I volunteered,” he offered with a shrug.  “My sister and I have both been out for years, our parents avoid the issue by generally not being available, hence the skiing trip whilst we are home from Uni.  We know what it’s like not to have supportive parents, I mean could probably have coped if it was just one of us, but when we both came out I think they felt it was a reflection on their parenting rather than, well, genetics. So when Lily invited us to stay for New Year it just seemed like the best way round it.”

I hadn’t really needed any clarification that Sam was gay too, my gaydar may be underused and a little out of tune but it had definitely pinged when I’d first seen him and, after all, he was sitting here with his hand clasped in mine.

Jules returned, bearing the promised bottles and we sat around on the dusty stage floor talking as we drank.  They told me of the fun they were having at university and I told them of my incredibly boring part time job as a sales assistant which helped keep me busy when I wasn’t in college.

Whether it was the alcohol or the sense of camaraderie I found myself frequently looking at Sam, sometimes catching him watching me; we both blushed far too easily.  Lily and Jules sat opposite; wrapped in each others arms.  Occasionally when I caught her eye Lily smiled back looking particularly pleased with herself.  I couldn’t blame her, she was obviously very happy with her girlfriend.

As midnight approached, from the other side of the curtain, the background music was switched over to the radio station where the count down started for the New Year, accompanied by the chants of the family.

10, 9, 8

Their arms still wrapped around each other Jules and Lily rose to their feet, lost in their own world.

7, 6

I glanced towards Sam and our eyes met, rather unsteadily we scrambled from the floor.

5, 4

I couldn’t seem to break eye contact as we reached out towards each other

3, 2

Without thinking about what I was doing I wrapped my arms around him, I could feel my heart hammering in my chest

1

“Happy New Year,” we whispered at each other and without thinking our mouths joined together in a very promising kiss.

That was two months ago.  We met the next day for coffee and talked for hours, and whilst we've been in contact by text and phone, this is the first time we've seen each other since New Year.  This weekend I get to spend the whole weekend with him, and I feel like my luck has definitely changed for the better.

The coach pulled up a short way from where Sam stood and I slung my bag over my shoulder as the door opened with a hiss.  He obviously hadn’t seen me as he was still watching the passengers from the coach in front disembark.  I crept up behind him and ducked under the umbrella.  He jumped slightly as I snaked my left arm around his waist and I leant into him, resting my chin on his shoulder.

“Hi,” I whispered looking up at him as he broke into a smile.  Yes, right then I felt like the luckiest guy in the world.

Domesticity...

I have a fridge magnet (actually I have several but that's another story) that says "dull women have immaculate houses".... and it's safe to say from that that I am definitely not dull!

I have to admit to having some sort of antipathy towards housework, particularly since being on my own..... it may be in part rebellion as when with my ex I was the one responsible for the housework (and cooking, and cleaning, and the garden, and the kennels etc etc) and if it wasn't done properly or well enough I used to get pointed remarks and dramatic sighs.... anyway, I am not a complete slob and the kitchen and bathrooms are always sparkly clean, which given that I am in those rooms, well the kitchen anyway, the majority of the time I am home, is probably why.

Now normally it takes me forever to work myself up into hoovering and dusting the rest of the house (upstairs because carrying the hoover up is a complete faff and carrying it down is, for someone as accident prone as I am, an adventure!) but for some reason today I have cleaned, I have yet to work out why as it usually takes until I have visitors to stay to get it to this level of freakily clean and tidy.... I wonder if I've caught some sort of housework bug... if so I hope I've got it well and truly out my system!

Well tomorrow is the last day of the festive holidays, and I intend to spend it finishing off my short story for the YA GLBT Goodreads group January photo challenge ..... I may post it tomorrow on here again as a test run, though my beta reader is on holiday and so it will be very much a hunt the mistake, typo, continuity error kind of thing as I always find something wrong after I've posted it somewhere!
