Typing one handed......

A few weeks a go a friend who is extremely important to me muttered rather plaintively that she really wished I would try to be a bit more careful as it worried her the number of self inflicted injuries I seemed to get.

Now, I really don't like worrying people so since then I have tried really, really hard to think before acting...... and I am doing really well..... apart from the odd paper cut I haven't managed to trip/fall/cut my fingers, stub my toes, walk into anything, set any part of me alight or in fact blow anything up.

Now I maintain that the reason I am typing this one handed, and with my left hand in fact - which by the way, when you touch type at 80 words a minute usually is extremely frustrating -  is not in fact because I have done something stupid..... I think perhaps the weather Gods and Goddesses needed appeasement.

I went round to visit mother earlier - and stare glacially at her soon to be ex lodger - as I was leaving I was sitting in the car with the door open talking to mum who was at the end of the garden path, my right hand was kind of waving about as I talked (habit, my hands talk as much as my mouth usually - particularly when I am explaining something).  As I was doing this there was a large gust of wind and my car door suddenly slammed shut........... on my ring and middle finger..... I screamed loud enough for the neighbours to come out to see what was wrong.

10 minutes under the cold tap, whilst I broke out my best Anglo Saxon vocabulary, I had a completely numb hand, save for two very throbbing fingers.  Nothing was broken so I very carefully drove home where I have partaken of pain killers, arnica tablets, and spent another hour or so with my hand in ice......

Now I would like to maintain the story that a gust of wind cannot possibly be my fault and it was purely an accident and doesn't count for the whole injuring myself by doing stupid things lecture.

I'm going to bed now...... without cats as I don't really want them clawing at my hand demanding to be stroked....... I am not convinced there will be much sleeping going on mind.......

Sheesh.... this has taken forever to type.......

Midweek mumbling of the disconnected kind....

Yesterday, after my optimistic post on Monday, didn't get off to a brilliant start when it took me 45 minutes, the help of 4 neighbours with 2 shovels and a lot of spinning about and sliding to get the car out the drive and off the road.... though I didn't burn the clutch out.... the trouble with having a car with naff all power in it (tis a 1.1 litre petrol engine) means that when you it three inches of packed solid ice on a frozen brick surface you aren't going anywhere.

I committed car abandonment last night half way down the road where was easy to get out this morning.  The car is there again tonight as the bit in front of my drive is still packed ice.... and I don't want a repeat performance.... I am sure the neighbours don't either.

The down side to this is 45 minutes of standing about in the freezing cold, shovelling snow etc is really not good for someone whose joints don't work at the best of times..... by tea time last night the arthritis flare up in my knees, hips and lower back resulted in an evening of lying flat and keeping as warm as possible.  It's been a bit better today.  All of this is not helped by the fact that it turns out I am allergic to one of my pain meds, so had to stop taking it, and trying to come off the other..... last night I would have killed for something stronger than paracetamol.

Today a friend of mine posted a picture of her new naked kitten...... wearing a fetching green stripey sweater...... now I have always insisted that mine did not need or in fact want sweaters....... which is something another of my friends argue about as she's had to be banned from knitting something for them..... alas she saw the kitten pictures and low and behold I can expect leg warmers at least for Gina and Hugo at some point in the future..... As if my poor cats weren't laughed at enough for the extreme ugliness :)

Work was hectic but boring.... the run up to the end of the financial year (which happens on 30th April) is upon us again, which means everyone wants everything doing, like last week.... I have shed loads of drafting to do to get money in...... so of course Rupert has early spring fever and is spawning plot bunnies at speed...... I've threatened him with castration if he doesn't stop .... I've now got four sets of voices screaming at me from inside my head....... but still feeling far too negative about my writing to do anything but listen to them.

Tonight I have had a nice long chat with a friend after which I've come upstairs to discover that the cats have eaten my mouse mat........ I mean seriously, I know that you are poor deprived indoor house cats who aren't allowed to roam free and hunt..... and it has the word mouse in it..... but it's not a real one!  I shall go lay out some cat treats around the upstairs of the house for them to hunt later whilst I curse them and try use my ancient roller ball mouse on a bobbly desk surface.....

General ramblings ....

Well I was going to update yesterday.... but I, erm, caught my foot on the wire to the electric heater in the study..... then kind of fell over the heater itself..... finally landing in an oh so ungraceful heap on the floor and slightly bashing the side of my head on the wooden chair I use when I am at the computer..... so I didn't update, I took it as a sign and went to bed....... This morning I woke to a slight singe on my right shin and a rather impressive bruise just to the side of my right eye...... I would add that during the whole falling over process Hugo watched with some amusement from the top of the door and then used me as a trampoline before I could get up.....

So, aside from being a klutz, what else have I been up to....

Well, last night I was going to blog about my eyebrows.... no seriously.... the thing is I don't really do the whole eyebrow plucking thing... okay sure, they are kept neat and I make sure there are two of them but that's about it...... except when I am stressed..... when I have a bad habit, well not even really a habit, as it's done totally unconsciously, of plucking my eyebrows the way a stressed cage bird would pull out it's feathers..... okay, so... I have passed my exams, I am enjoying a week off work when the office is mainly shut so nothing can go wrong, my leg is getting better, the critters are all fine, the family are doing well.... so why the hell did I manage to sit the other night and rip out most of my right eyebrow and pretty much half of my left??  I didn't even realise I'd done it till I got in the car on Saturday morning and looked in the rear view mirror... I look moth eaten.....  I've done some tidying up but, meh, they look terrible, thank goodness I can hide them behind my glasses till they grow back!

Today has mostly been about prep for mum's Christmas Eve party.... I am on salads again, and puddings.... for which I made and iced cup cakes this afternoon....  They are cherry cupcakes and have almond frosting and a cherry on top, which was mum's suggestion as they will look like Rudolph's nose......... only they don't they look like boobs with large red nipples....... which has given me the giggles all afternoon and there is no way on earth I will keep a straight face tomorrow handing out nipple buns to the kids who come to the party...

Tomorrow I am on taxi duty as my sister isn't driving at present.... we are off out to the farm shop to pick up the chicken for Christmas dinner (and something from the veggie deli for me) and then to get the last few bits of fresh veg, bread and make sure that we are well  stocked up on critter food....oh and I've been promised a gingerbread latte (decaf of course!) for my services!  Then in the afternoon I have to make the dreaded meringue for Christmas day and scribble like mad to finish a ficlet I am hoping to do as an extra present for someone..... I shall be so busy I won't have time to accidentally pluck anything else.....

Adventures in baking...

One thing our family have always done is made sure for big occasions no one person is left to do everything. Which means at Christmas the cooking always gets shared out... not just for the day itself, but for mum's Christmas Eve open house party... (and I have warned my sister's other half as it's his first year that mum will have already told "everyone" going all about him ..... she did it with me, though I am sure that was partly because she wanted to watch people's reactions to the fact that I would be bringing my girlfriend... *rolls eyes* .... I know, I know, I really am grateful for my parents, but my mother is sometimes a little too proud of having a lesbian daughter....)

For some reason, puddings and deserts always falls to me.... and as we don't do traditional in our house I am going to be preparing all three of my short-listed deserts this weekend.

There will be.... Hazelnut and Chocolate Meringue Roulade or Chocolate and Cardamom Cheesecake or possibly Apple & Plum Tart in Cinnamon sweet pastry.... the two that don't win the Christmas dinner vote I'll make again for Christmas Eve..

Now the first two I have recipes for or at least as near as dammit make up the bits that don't quite fit as you go along kind of recipes.... the last I just thought sounded like it would work..... I've started the filling off overnight by putting the apples/plums/sugar into the slow cooker (crock pot for those reading this not in the UK) and have made up the pastry.... it's only been going for about 30 minutes but it already smells rather nice...

Erm.... I might also have possibly sliced my finger a bit.... I didn't actually realise it at first as having no heating in and the fruit I was cutting having just come out the fridge my fingers when rather cold and white.... sitting in the lounge a bit later in front of the fire my circulation came back and, well, my finger decided to leak quite a bit...... it's safely under a plaster now....

Apparently in my baking weekend my sister wants me to produce bags of cookies for her Christmas Sale at the University to raise money for the prize her department awards to the student statistician with the highest exam marks in memory of their colleague who died last year..... looks like it might be a very busy weekend in the kitchen.... I must try not to blow anything up.... or burn anything.... or damage myself any more.... at least the first aid box is well stocked.......

(un) Happy Feet....

Today has not been a good day for my poor feet!

Feet are important, I know this, they take the weight of most of a person's everyday stresses and strains, they are used for walking, driving, swimming, standing up after sitting down... they help you balance and it's a good thing to look after them really well..... as I learnt in the summer from the toe nail incident that landed me on the sofa for two weeks and has resulted in the lymph glands in my lower left leg packing up....

I have not always been good to my feet...... mainly because I hate and detest having to wear shoes and socks.... I am learning to be nicer to them as my McMillan Nurse was quite stroppy about the fact that I need to keep something on them pretty much all the time to protect them...... I sulk a bit sometimes about it but in general I try to do as I am told on this one (fear of landing back on the sofa for two weeks.... grief that was boring)
Obviously so not my feet!!

Anyway, I digress.... today.... it was wet and miserable this morning and in the walk from the car park to the office I knew I was going to get wet .... what I hadn't realised was that my right shoe had a hole in the bottom of it and a small crack near the heel...... I did realise after I'd splashed through a puddle or two and squelched a few steps further as my foot began to feel cold and soggy..... I divested myself of said shoe and the accompanying sock when I got to my desk but alas it did not dry out before I had to put it back on.... consequently my right foot was very wrinkled and prune like.

I was looking forward to having a nice foot pampering session this evening with some lovely citrus and rock salt bath goodies that I'd been sent ..... however, as I'd run out of cat biscuits, and three chicken wings will not feed four dogs, I stopped at the shops on the way home in order to prevent a mutiny by the critters.... by the time I'd got everything I needed I was flinging three carrier bags into the car, in the dark car park, and sliding into the drivers seat.  As I dropped the bags onto the passenger seat and pulled the door shut behind me I kind of forgot to pull my right foot all the way into the car........ and slammed the door straight across my foot just below my toes!

After sitting in the car park with my eyes watering and my foot throbbing for about five minutes I tentatively tried it on the accelerator and brake before deciding that it was probably okay to drive home..... yeah, that was painful, and possibly in hindsight not more of my more brilliant ideas.

I half hopped and half hobbled my way into the house and pacified the critters with food before daring to remove my shoe.... the bruising was already starting to come up across the top of my foot, and after carrying out several strange contortionist type moves I could see that it was a bit bruised on the bottom as well.  There is some swelling but not a huge amount.  I thought about going to A&E and getting it x-rayed but as I can move all my toes and it isn't agony to touch on top or to stand and put weight on it I am pretty sure it's just bad bruising......I ice packed it for a while and have now strapped it up nice and tightly, taken some pain killers (though I am sure the approved method of this is not to swallow them by swigging cough medicine out the bottle) and am now sitting here with my foot up on the cat's toy box whilst I question why is it that these things just seem to happen to me??

The weekend by numbers...

1.  I did it, I was examinated, it is over and done with... results mid-December... bugger all I can do about them so I am refusing to worry.  When I got home, did I celebrate my freedom from academia after 3 long hard years?  Did I have a drink or three to get over the exam stress?  Did I go paint the town red (well pale pink, I'm old and not that energetic)?  Nope, none of the above, I took lots of cold cures and went to bed early.... I really am an old woman at times!

2.  Saturday started ridiculously early with the realisation that in fact I couldn't breathe .... no nothing drastic.... I have a heavy cold, so of course Gina is trying to aid my recovery (not) by lying in the crook of my neck, with her head resting heavily over my windpipe....The rest of the day was rather boring... I did some serious comfort reading .... and confirmed to myself that, why yes, I do in fact have a crush on a fictional character!.... not so unusual? well perhaps, only in this case object of said crush is male... which for me makes it a bit odd...... ah well, never mind, no one is going to have a problem with me taking him home and looking after him are they?? (though given his Top like tendencies this maybe a mistake on my part)

3.  Laundry happened at some point yesterday... cos clean clothes are a helpful thing for the working week.... only problem is.. lack of heating and wet clothes does not a happy mix make... upstairs in my house feels like a slightly damp laundrette.  I have the heater on in the book room to get things dry... the cats however think this is just on for them....

4.  I don't know about anyone else, but when I have a cold my lips tend to dry out and crack... they did this overnight but I didn't realise until after I'd reached out and drank the lemon squash I had by the bed.... erm... OUCH!!  really not to be recommended... I was very awake and cursing in seconds!

5.  I have no voice!!  The dogs think this is a wonderful thing as unless I can get my hands on something non breakable when they open their gobs that I can throw towards them they've realised I can do nothing to shut them up (usually I shout, well I don't, I just say "Gretchen" in a very loud and stern tone.... which works, well on all bar one dog.... okay, guess which... I tried it earlier and sounded like Kermit on Helium... not good!)

6.  I have been beta reading a story today (which I am really enjoying) but appear to be trying to eat my own body weight in satsumas as I do it...

7.  I had planned to do some baking as well today, but discovered when I bent down to put the oven on that going dizzy was possibly not a good thing to have happen to you when you are using an electric mixer, hot gas oven etc.... well particularly as this is me we are talking about.

8. I need to get rid of my germs before tomorrow... work is not a fun place at the best of times, though I suppose I can run a quarantine flag up the back of my chair and wheeze at people till they go away and leave me alone...... I shall have to find a friendly minion to answer my phone for me though... what a shame ;)

Random rambling......

Well twice in two days I've had to scrape ice off my car before going to work....... winter is obviously here..... I have to admit though I do enjoy cold dry days, particularly when it's sunny and there is just a bit of a wind that slightly stings your face (I could live without the whole not being able to feel the tops of my fingers mind)... There has been some nice dawn dog walks with the mob over the past few days, crunching over the fallen leaves and watching them dash about the park their breath steaming in the cold (except Gretchen, who has to stay on her lead as she sods off at the first opportunity and would leg it across three counties given a chance).... that said, it's lashing it down and blowing a gale this evening so tomorrow's walk may be (a) shorter and (b) wetter....

Yesterday morning I went to see the MacMillan Nurse Specialist to have my lymph nodes prodded... my stupid leg got measured, photographed and drawn on .... with thick black pen which I still can't wash off... because the lymph system got quite badly damaged with the infection that spread from my foot in August I am being fitted for a highly (un)sexy black compression stocking ... okay so it has a really swish silk lining but still....I got to try a wrist support made of the same material and, dear Goddess, it's going to feel like my leg has been severely squished....... Ah well, I am under strict instructions to do as I am told and wear the damn thing, and as I'd like my lymph system to kind of return to normal I guess I'd better behave.... just hope it's not too painful!

The revision continues....... and yes, that about sums it up.........well actually it didn't tonight, I needed a night off after working quite hard all weekend and yesterday afternoon.  Today was not a whole bundle of laughs at work as my team leader's last day is tomorrow and she is trying to tidy up what lose ends she can and what she can't she's dropping onto my desk to deal with....

Right, really need to have an early night....(though part of me wants to stay up and watch the US election unfold..... Even I got to vote today.... okay so it was only my postal vote for the local Police Commissioner elections but still, I get to say I voted *grin* ).... I was up far too late last night reading stories on line and woke this morning with that horrible feeling that I'd missed something and that something was horribly wrong somewhere or with someone......... Feeling seems to have gone now so sleep should happen..... that is if I can calm the cats down.... I'm not sure what is wrong with them this evening..... they are racing round like they're on speed... Hugo has just climbed into a big shopping bag that was lying on the spare room bed and then fallen off the bed whilst still wearing it ... he's currently kind of in/under it racing around the room whilst his mother pounces on it from the highest vantage point she can find....... and, oh yes, there goes the clothes airer....... best go extract him and pick up all my clothes... again......

An accident prone kind of day...

Or maybe things were just out to get me!

The day didn't get off to a good start, well being woken at 4.08 am by one of the dogs with their "urgent" bark is never a good sign.... so I was probably half way downstairs before I was actually fully awake, then, without turning the lights on ... which generally I don't at that time as increasing the light levels decreases the chances of me or any of the critters getting more sleep... I got the dogs out their night crates... which was fine till I got to Hopes, which has a sprung latch mechanism .... that I misjudged and trapped my little finger between it and the metal cage front... ouch!  There was some bouncing up and down whilst using creative language as I bustled the dogs out into the garden whilst telling them (and possibly me) to keep the volume down.....  little finger is a little bruised around the middle joint.....

I made it safely then through the morning to 7.45, when I got into the shower, forgetting that I'd had the bath mat up to clean the bath before bed the night before and hadn't checked that it had latched onto the now squeaky clean bath, queue my right leg twisting about as I was standing on it and trying to get the left leg over the edge of the bath without Hugo attacking my foot........ slightly jarred and bruised right knee where it hit the tap.....

I should be grateful I got to work safely by this point......

Anyway, as the day progressed it appeared that the stationary was in fact out to get me....... and my hands are, erm, decorated with plasters.... I have one on the fleshy bit at the bottom of the thumb on my left hand where a metal binder from a document bundle decided to slice into me whilst I was undoing it so I could get a document out to photocopy it....another is on the outside of my right hand where I managed to stab myself with the sharp pointy blade of the scissors I was using to get into the boxes containing the next file I was working one... and finally... and most painfully..... I have a tiny little paper cut on the tip of my right ring finger.... which hurts more than the rest put together and bled all over the desk........

My evening meal tonight was a vegetable bake, which involves lots of finely sliced vegetables in layers..... I elected to use the food processor to slice the veg... I thought using a knife might be tempting fate..... and having reclined on the sofa with my cup of calming herbal team I had hoped for a quite peaceful injury free end to the evening...... yeah, cos that didn't happen as Ivan managed to open the babygate into the hall whilst Hugo was still in there and as I scooted my chair backwards to leap after him and rescue, well one of them, I managed to send the cup flying from the table to the floor, where it shattered sending still rather too warm to be wearing it tea up my right leg.... and as I tried to herd the dogs out the way of the broken mug I managed to stand on one of the pieces......

I think that I shall declare today officially over and go hide in my nice soft comfy bed with my paperback copy of Tigerland which arrived this afternoon........ I should be safe from further injury...... well unless I move my feet in a way Gina and Hugo don't approve of that is.....

Sunday, 2 September 2012

Erm... ah... oops?

Well it had been a while, in fact almost four months, but I suppose it had to happen sooner or later....

yep my magical powers struck again ........

Saturday night I was up far too late (well into Sunday morning really) because I got sucked into a chat room on a new website I joined (though I didn't actually join in the chatter, I just lurked with intent)..... So, being a bit tired after the 5 am dog walk and feeding routine I decided sod it, it's Sunday, I am going read for a while, so I made myself comfortable in my corner of the sofa and must have drifted off because the next thing I knew was that there were protest songs coming from the stairs where the cats had wondered if I expected them to somehow feed themselves....

Having apologised to them profusely, well, filled their dishes up after which they promptly ignored me I decided it was actually time to get my backside into gear and get organised.....

Now, here I should explain, I live in a reasonably modern house, that is to say it was built in the 1980's, but it has the original boiler/heating system and a horrible electric shower which goes over the bath .....  So this morning I switched on said shower, got in (after having my feet attacked by Hugo who likes to wait for me to get one leg into the bath before attacking the other foot.... it's strange what amuses a cat)... there I was midway through my ablutions (shower gel of choice this morning was tea tree and mint) when suddenly, there was a bang, quite a loud bang, from the vicinity of just behind me on the wall, where the shower unit is... and then the water went cold.... the dogs started barking and the house alarm went off...

Now the house alarm going off like that signals that the electricity trip switch on the fuse box has switched itself off.... so I tentatively reached out and switched the water off .. before legging it downstairs to tell Ivan that the world wasn't coming to an end (bless him, he doesn't half over react at times) and to switch off the alarm, once I'd flipped the trip switch...... could I remember the alarm code as I am standing in the cupboard (which doubles as the downstairs toilet) staring blankly at the alarm panel.... whilst naked and dripping water and soap all over the place......

At which point my neighbour's teenage son knocks on the front door... his mother having sent him round to check I was okay.....

Luckily, I managed to remember the alarm code, reassured the child through the closed door that I was fine, and get myself organised enough to go finish washing..... albeit without using the shower...

Seems I'll be calling the plumber this week to get myself a nice new shower..... but why do these things always happen to me?

Freedom!!

Hurrah! Today I was released from the sofa!

Okay, so I am not 100% match fit (but then really, when ever am I?) but today I was allowed off my sofa and out into the wild...... well that is to say, to put on non slouching about with the dogs clothes and to go out into public doing normal things! After over two weeks of sitting with my feet up it was rather a relief!

Down side - my feet did not appreciate the whole having to go into socks/shoes again and made their displeasure known!

For the first time in two weeks, the dogs got a proper walk (okay so still a very short one compared to usual, but they didn't seem to mind), I got to go to the shops - and bought new shoes (black converse type ones), somehow bought two new skirts I hadn't planned on buying, bought out the pet store in an attempt to pacify the masses during my absence tomorrow, and filled up the car, got cash out and other necessities for work tomorrow!

I am currently pumped full of antihistamines to combat the effects of the allergic reaction caused by one of the meds the doc put me on, as well as still peeling like a leper .....

So, back to work for me tomorrow..... part of which I am pleased about.... part of which I am dreading (I haven't had 2 weeks away from my desk in one go for over about 10 years!)  I have to face the dreaded "back to work" interview tomorrow with my supervisor where I shall try and persuade her I am well enough to be there.......

So, time for an early night with a book me thinks.........

Thursday, 16 August 2012

Hummmmm.....

I am going back to work on Monday........ this is a bloody good thing as I am starting to panic somewhat about the amount of work I've missed......

Trouble is....

I am still covered in a very itchy rash
I am spending at least 2 hours napping during the day
The blisters on my calf are still very sore and weepy

What I really want is to have someone who will put their foot down, tell me to pack in any idea about going back to work, to concentrate on getting properly better and not worry......

Yeah, cos that ain't gonna happen...........

I hate being ill, I am fed up and just want it all to go away now....

Proper poorly.......

As any of you who have been reading this blog for a while will know (a) I don't do being ill and (b) I am prone to occasionally doing things that are just a tad stupid......which brings me to the cautionary tale that has left me off work for a week one very strong antibiotics with the threat of hospital ....

So, we shall go back to last Friday night when, tired after the less than exciting working week had ended I caught my sock yet again on the hang nail on my second toe.... "sod this" says I, possibly even out loud to the cat who was leaping up and down on the bed next to me demanding (not sure what it was demanding, but it's a cat demanding is one of their set emotions)... and proceeded to pull the hang nail.... it bled a little, so I cleaned it up, whapped some antiseptic cream on it and carried on.....

Roll forwards to around 11 pm that night, as I got colder and colder, two duvets and two naked cats could not stop me shivering, literally teeth chattering till my jaw hurt shivering.  By 2 am I was downstairs on the sofa in front of a fan on high speed trying to cool myself back down again trying to workout what the hell was going on.  I lost most of Saturday in the same sequence of hot and cold... which I tried to combat with 4 hourly paracetamol to break the fever.... whilst sleeping on and off all day.

Come Sunday I was feeling marginally better but the temperature still kept swinging and I noticed my foot had started to swell...... okay thinks I sticking more antiseptic on my toe... must be infected .. happens to hangnails I pull on my finger nails....no problem..... yeah right.....

Sunday night, still feeling pretty naff I realise my foot is now warm to touch and the swelling and slight reddish tinge is creeping up my leg...... okay, I give in, doctors on Monday it was....... only there wasn't an appointment till 3.20 pm........

Bless him, my doctor took one look at my leg, took my temperature, looked at me and said "why are you still standing, never mind driving or able to function reasonably?"  To which I had no real answer save than because that is what I do.....  Apparently my temperature was somewhere just over 103 and I have cellulitis up my leg.... yup all from pulling a stupid nagging little hangnail....

My doctor started muttering about how I should go to hospital for an IV antibiotic drip... to which I protested on the grounds that there was no one to look after rent a mob and the naked ones (not that I called them that in the surgery or he'd probably have decided that yes, the temperature had indeed fried my brain)... so after a bit of bartering he agreed I could have the strongest antibiotics they are allowed to prescribed for a week on the condition I come back Wednesday to see the nurse and Friday to see him.... I've also been told (not asked, told) that if it's not any better on Friday I can look forward to a weekend in hospital whether I like it or not!

So, 2 doses into my medication, the temperature appears to be marginally under control though my body feels like a battlefield the morning after the battle.... the infection doesn't appear to be spreading any further up my leg..... but I am being a good girl and staying off it (it's a good job my sofa is comfortable!) drinking lots of fluids and wishing I'd trained the critters better to wait upon me in times of need!

Never ever again will I just pull a hang nail because it's annoying me..........

muppet moment (part, oh about 49 by now)

Today I was good and did my essay!....I now have one more assignment to finish and that is it, no more, never again, ever, if I even suggest studying something else please hit me repeatedly over the head until the suggestion goes away!

Anyway, after that I had housework to do as I have an overnight visitor tonight (we are going to AP's funeral tomorrow together).  Now I am not keen on air fresheners of the chemical kind, but having numerous critters I do need some sort of air freshener and tend to light scented candles (Yankee Candles for preference - the air type ones/clean cotton/fluffy towels etc)

So today as I was dashing about with the hoover and generally dusting I lit a couple of candles on the kitchen window sill and carried on.  Coming back to them later I noticed that only one candle appeared to have a flame (they are in glass holders which are inside black metal cut out type outer holders) so I picked up the not lit candle and got a match to relight it, tilted it slightly and, erm, it wasn't actually out..... which I realised as I put my little finger in too close to what was actually the lit flame..... which made me jump.... and jerk my hand holding the candle holder... which was full of molten wax.........

Yup, all over one hand, and up the bottom part of my arm.

Luckily I was over the kitchen sink so I stuck my hand and arm under the tap .... luckily no burns from the flame to my fingers and I had managed to drop the lit match into the mop bucket....

I then had an interesting half hour peeling the dried on wax off my arms and fingers......It would probably be wrong to admit that I quite enjoyed the whole peeling off experience really.......

A moment of "ouch"...... again!!

I am sitting here typing this with an egg cup full of milk being held over one eye..... no it's not some strange and unusual new kink...... it is, unsurprisingly, the result of a moment of stupidity... again!!

Once a week my sister and I are expected to attend mum's house for tea... tonight was my turn and as it was some sort of Thai veggie salad with glass noodles my sister declined (my family like to tell people I am actually adopted as unlike any of the rest of them I don't really drink, I don't eat meat and I don't like hot weather... mum has promised my sister if the weather holds they will bbq over the weekend as I have guests they intend to do an all out meat bbq with a fair bit of wine...)

Anyway, back to the salad... which was very nice, and all finely chopped crunchy veggies and marinated tofu chunks in quite a nice chilli & garlic sauce.....

So, having eaten and been entertained for an hour (in which my mother caught me up on the neighbourhood gossip, and got a slight lecture come rant about the correct form of address for the FtoM 13 year old next door but one....... which she wrote down and is going to tell the other neighbours... she's well trained like that) I got in the car to drive home....(and yes, I did put my shoes on!)

and about half way I lifted my glasses to wipe my eye as I waited at traffic lights.... and almost hit the roof of the car.... yup... chilli sauce on my fingers... bad bad mistake...

I squinted and eye watered whilst driving slowly and somewhat erratically the rest of the way home at the same times as cursing loudly ... twas bloody painful .... the milk has helped take the sting out but my eye is horribly bloodshot and revolting....

I phoned mum to say thank you and told her what happened... did I get sympathy... no I just got reminded that there could have been worse places for me to put chilli fingers.....though she did concede that possibly not when I was driving.....

An accident prone kind of day

I don't remember reading in my horoscope that today was going to be one where I would be better wrapped in cotton wool and tucked away in a safe place.... It should have been...

It started shortly after I'd caved to the demands of rent-a-mob, at about 4.45 this morning.  After walking and feeding them I decided that 6am on a Saturday was way to early to get dressed (properly, I mean, I do wear clothes when walking the mob - just not clothes that I'd be seen out in in daylight, well when other people were around) so I decreed we should have a couple of hours sofa surfing... well snoozing.  All was well till I was startled awake by the phone and flipped over, managing to roll slightly off the sofa and crack my head against the coffee table.....

My adventures in being accident prone did not stop there...  having run the gauntlet of sugar hyped kids, sullen teenagers and harassed adults in the supermarket I got on the down travelator to the car park with my fully laden trolley, and then got side tracked watching people on the opposite side moving up... I get caught up with people watching, seeing their interactions, making up stories in my head about them... which is all well and good, except sometimes you get carried away and in this instance, when you get to the end of the travelator and go to step off not realising your floor length skirt is caught in the wheel of your trolley and end up pushing the trolley forwards and not quite following it, before going arse over tit in the middle of a crowded foyer of shoppers.... it wasn't elegant on the way down, and getting up lacked any finesse at all... I scurried off to the car extremely red faced.

As if that wasn't enough... I've just gone to get into my pj's and dressing gown, and the hook over the back of the bedroom door - which is metal and quite heavy - has just pinged off and hit me on the shoulder.

Definitely time for bed in the hope that tomorrow things will not be out to get me!

If only falling over was an Olympic sport....

Last night's blog post never happened due to another moment of well, accidental stupidity, on my part..... you remember as a kid you were always nagged to take things upstairs and not to just abandon them on the stairs.... well what do you know there is a good reason for this.

I got in from work last night and threw the dogs chicken wings at them then went to pacify the cats with offerings of edible things (I'd even remembered to buy some biscuits for them in the vain hope they'd stop screaming at me about how starving they were)....So, I safely negotiated the babygate at the bottom of the stairs (despite no babies, I seem to have more babygates than the average baby owning household for goodness sake) and got four steps up, whilst carrying a new sack of cat litter and the biscuits. I was carefully negotiating with the cats on the whole "let me get upstairs without treading on you" thing when I put my foot on some papers I'd left on the stairs, slipped and crashed in an inelegant manner back down the five or so stairs I'd managed and crashed into the babygate.

I was very impressed I didn't manage to smash through the babygate being as I am no lightweight... I do have some impressive bruising, only impressive as it's an imprint of the stripes on the babygate up one leg, oh and an on my left arm but that one is just a boring splodge.  I think from the looks I was getting my efforts didn't earn me high marks from the onlooking cats or dogs, for either technique or artistic merit......in fact I possibly lost marks from the cats for delaying the arrival of their food!

I have not been at work today.... instead I have been having a "study day", no not a euphemism in any way shape or form for skiving off work and doing bugger all...... I have actually been studying.... scarily effectively too as I managed to do two of the assignments I've been procrastinating about.... just have to hope the tutor thinks they are good enough to submit for marking now!

Mum finally had her surgery today - despite the hospitals promise of "you will be first on the list" she didn't actually go down for surgery till 2pm.  My sister visited her this evening as she was back on the ward if rather groggy still.  She is hoping to be discharged tomorrow evening...... she is obviously the member of our family that does optimism as my sister and I think it will be Friday.  Just pleased it's over and done with though now.

Musical accompaniment for today...

So today hasn't gone to plan...... took mum into hospital for 7 am as requested, then at lunch she texted to say they were taking her down at 2pm... at 2.50pm she texted again to say she hadn't gone down and then at 5 pm she phoned to tell me that they'd overbooked the theatre and she was being bumped to a later date, currently unknown...... I was not amused.

So I donned my most lawyerly persona and my Court Room voice and headed off to collect her and, erm, possibly have a word or several with the hospital staff........ she's first on the surgery list for next Wednesday, so we get to do it all again.

Aside from that I have mangled myself....... ankle currently in cold compress after tripping over the cat - who says it's my own fault for not going fast enough with the food...... bruising and grazes all over knuckles of my right hand courtesy of misjudging the distance between the car door and the garden gate and getting my hand stuck in between........ sometimes I have to roll my eyes at myself!

So today's tune (as it's Wednesday and all that jazz) would be my "getting in the right frame of mind" song that I played in the car on the way to the hospital....

gloomy post.....

Meh! work is being horrible.... well kind of... I rather put my foot in it on Friday and the upshot is that I feel that I have dug myself a huge hole and am standing at the bottom waiting to be buried under a tonne of concrete as the official scapegoat for something.

As a result we are "not to discuss it" in the office....... which relates basically to me being sent to Coventry.... I've spoken to my team leader, oh a couple of sentences maybe, over the last two days and said thank you when coffee has been plonked on the end of my desk, but that's basically it.  It's just a case of keep my head down and crack on with the work and hope that the skies don't actually fall in.

Combine that with the miserable weather and generally things kind of suck round here at the moment..... I should have been out at our Beltane celebrations to welcome the summer but it got cancelled because of the weather - tis hard to light the bonfires when it's not stopped raining for about a week!

Oh, and to add insult to injury, I fell up a set of stone steps today whilst out with the dogs...... I never remember grazed knees and shins hurting this much when I was a kid!

Cough, sneeze, splutter, grrrr

Well, after a somewhat sleepless night in which I kept waking up to take notes of things I needed to double check before my meeting today, I am pleased to say that it went very well and was highly productive ... hurrah! see me earn brownie points!!

However, as I was summarising it for my boss I started sneezing... and kept sneezing... and couldn't stop sneezing... so I took some paracetamol and sneezed for a bit more, then started shivering and generally feeling rather pants.

So this evening I phoned my mother for sympathy... cos isn't that what mothers are for when your animals just look at you as if to say, yeah, stop sneezing and feed us... to be told "oh, your sister isn't feeling well either".  Apparently my sister "thinks" she's coming down with something so stayed off work today and won't go in tomorrow.... my sister works in higher education and they are a lot more laid back about taking time off than my employers are... so after I'd croaked down the phone for a bit mums said "you aren't going to work tomorrow are you?"  ... and, well, yes I am actually.

Now, here's the thing....I hate giving in to being ill, I hate being ill full stop, whether that is a cold or the facet joint in my spine suddenly popping apart and the nerves in my leg going haywire...so I tend to go to work no matter what.

When I got my current job (which will be 4 years ago come September) my employers were a bit wary as I am registered disabled... but I have the best sickness record in the whole team... in all the time I've been there I've had half a day off sick (and that was only cos you can't actually deny being ill when you throw up in the waste bin next to your desk!).

So this brings me to another point..... yes I am disabled, but yes I work full time, I don't scrounge off the state as it is so frequently implied that all disabled people do... In fact, I have other disabled friends who would give anything to be able to be in full time paid employment but suitable jobs with employers willing to take a chance on them just aren't out there... perhaps rather than making out that all disabled people are work shy they should actually look at employment opportunities for them and persuade employers to perhaps take a risk on a few!

Ok, mini rant over, off to find my duvet and the cat shaped foot warmers - thank goodness naked cats don't leave fur in the bed!!

Muppetry strikes again....

Today didn't start particularly well when the dogs got me up at 4.30 am and I decided to make a cup of tea before going to recline on the sofa.

So the lesson learnt this morning was... when you discover you have no milk for your tea, but do have a lemon, turn the damn light on before cutting a slice of lemon, because in the dark it is difficult to tell where the lemon ends and your finger begins.... until it is too late that is.... lemon juice on new cut combination just added to the excitement of me stumbling around in the dark and cursing whilst trying not to drip blood on anything.  I've only nicked the end of my index finger but but it made for some interesting typing today at work!

The rest of the day went much better....
