April Short Story .....

So I was mean to be concentrating on my LHNB story when I made the mistake of looking at the photo for this month's short story YA prompt..... and these guys arrived in my head and wanted a story.... From the set up I've built myself I have a horrible feeling that it's going to evolve... which so wasn't the plan!  I shall now go back to arguing with my LHNB guys!

anyway, enjoy

Marc paused for a second before pushing open the door to their room, hoping that it would be empty.  A quick glance round revealed nothing more than plain white walls, two beds with identical quilts and a single chest of drawers.  No room in The Facility was allowed to be personalised.

With a sigh he shut the door behind him.  He only three hours left and had to move fast if he was going to be ready to leave.  Part of him wished that Riordan could be there, that they could have a chance to spend at least a little more time together; but a greater part knew he had to do this alone.  Riordan was already struggling to cope as their separation loomed ever closer.  He had to make this as easy as he could for the younger boy.

Opening the top draw of the chest he began to remove his scant possessions.  Onto his bed he laid two pairs of trousers, a couple of shirts, a thick sweater and a week’s worth of underwear; aside from the scruffy jeans and t-shirt that he stood up in these were all of his clothes.  Next the pile of clothes he placed a small bag of toiletries and worn towel.

Pulling out the battered green canvas bag from the bottom draw he shook out the very few personal items he possessed; a silver watch with a smashed glass face which he’d never known to work and five handmade birthday cards.   Staring blankly at the cards he stumbled back until his knees hit the bed frame and sat heavily on the hard mattress.

Pushing the watch onto his left wrist he swallowed deeply, fighting the tears that were threatening to fall.  He had to be strong, he had to get through this.  He had no choice.  He knew what happened when you reached your eighteenth birthday.  From one extreme to the other he’d seen others leave, from those that marched proudly through the arched gate into the darkness without looking back, to others who had been dragged kicking and screaming by the Facilitators.  The Facilitators were the only ones to come in and out of The Facility, and they never talked about what was beyond the walls.  None of those who left at age eighteen ever came back to tell their story.

The watch he’d had as long as he could remember, he’d been told it was from his life before The Facility but he had no recollection of that time.  He was one of the Foundlings.  Those who came to The Facility as babies and infants.  There were always a few of that age that came each year, starting out in the nursery where they were raised till they reached their fifth year.  Marc’s earliest memories were of the nursery, of warmth and comfort, of the others who grew up with him, the girl with yellow hair who had the next crib in the long dormitory.

After the nursery there had been a series of shared rooms.  Boys and girls living quarters separated to opposite ends of the huge multi story building.  Every couple of years he would change rooms. Sometimes they would be in kept in groups, other times he had been alone.  As he grew older and moved up the building more often than not he would share his room with Incomers; those who came to The Facility at an older age and had made it through the initiation and settlement phases.

As a Foundling it was part of his responsibility to teaching them the ways of The Facility, of the rules and expectations.  In return he listen to them talk of homes and families they missed as they settled in; or became resigned to their situation.  Some accepted things quickly, some fought, some became depressed; and some of them never adjusted.  Marc shuddered at the memory of listening to other people’s nightmares, and worse, afterwards, their silence.

Five years ago, Marc reached the top floor of the facility and was given a room whose windows overlooked the courtyard and the gateway to the Darkness outside.  He was also given Riordan.  A thin, tousled haired Incomer five months younger than himself and fresh out of Initiation.

Riordan was confused, scared and hurt.  He talked of an accident that had taken his family, of relatives who refused to take him in because he was gay and of finding himself at The Facility with no recollection of how he got there.  The only possessions that had come with him was a thick sketch book and a set of coloured chalks.

Marc had taken him under his wing; and made a huge mistake.  For the first time in his life he had become attached to another person.  When the nightmares got too much, rather than putting his pillow over his head and shutting out the noise, he found himself leaving his own bed and crawling under the duvet on the other bed to hold Riordan close until it was over. Even after Riordan stopped having nightmares sleep was elusive for both unless curled around each other in one of the beds.

Marc taught Riordan about what it took to survive in The Facility. In return Riordan had taught him about a life outside, of the love of a family, of the love of a friend.  Where before there had just been the rules and routine of The Facility, Riordan gave Marc a friendship he’d never had before and a reason to occasionally break the rules.

The first birthday card had been for his 14th birthday.  A hand drawn view from the window, but instead of the darkness beyond the high stone walls a rainbow hung bright over it.  Though Marc had nothing to give Riordan in return, each year another card was silently put on the end of Marc’s bed during his birthday, the last being this morning.  Each a scene from The Facility, but with something else; something uniquely Riordan; something that showed light and optimism.

They’d talked about what being eighteen meant, where Riordan had come from it was a time of celebration, of becoming an adult.  In The Facility it was the time of Parting.  No one stayed in The Facility past sunset on their eighteenth birthday.

And now it was Marc’s turn.  He had till dusk.  Then they would come for him and escort him from The Facility, through the gates and into the darkness beyond.

Catching his breath and wiping his hand over his eyes, Marc returned to his packing.  Stuffing the clothes into the canvas bag.  Removing the watch from his wrist he paused as he went to add it to the bag. Turning it over in his hands he scanned the room, before opening the second draw which contained Riordan’s belongings.  Carefully he unrolled one of the pairs of socks and tucked the watch inside and folding the socks back up.  He returned the socks to the draw, pushing them to the back where hopefully they wouldn’t be discovered for a while.

Gently he slid the cards down the side of the bag, keeping them as flat as he could, and then pulled the drawstring tight.  That was it, aside from his coat and boots his entire life, 18 years of existence were closed into one small bag.

Now he just had to wait.

Lying on his bed staring out the window at the gateway, Marc’s mind was a million miles away.  He didn’t hear the door quietly open and close, or the sock clad feet approach the bed over the polished wooden floor.  He started violently as Riordan dropped onto the bed beside him.  Lying full length beside him, Riordan curled his left leg over Marc’s and wriggled closer, until their shoulders bumped.

There was nothing more to say, now was just the time to be, to draw strength from each other.

Outside the sky grew darker.

Riordan rolled off the bed as soon as the quiet knock on the door sounded.  Pulling Marc to his feet the two boys embraced.

“Five months,” Riordan whispered.  “Wait for me.”
“I’ll be outside the gateway.” Marc replied as he picked up his bag and slipped on his coat and boots before moving to the door.  It wasn’t an empty promise, if there was any way he could keep it he would.

The Facilitators escorted him down the corridor towards the lift.  As tradition went, the boys of his floor stood silently at their doors to watch him go.  The journey to the ground floor was swift with no stops on the way down.  The main doorway to the court yard was open, two new Facilitators stood sentry at each side.  Squaring his shoulders and hitching his bag higher Marc took a deep breath and walked forward into the cool, damp evening air.

Flanked on each side he walked over the gravel Court towards the gateway.  As he approached he heard the squeal of metal as the bolt was pulled back, then the door opened outwards.

Turning his head once he looked up at The Facility.  A light shone in the room he’d just left, in the window the still figure of the boy he’d just left watched him.  Marc raised his hand in a salute and nodded before turning and walking out boldly into the darkness.

Switching off............

I do worry when Gretchen looks this cute and innocent
I am sure she's plotting something!
Today has been a much better day thankfully..... not least in part due to a passing comment via text from my father last night (yep, I have trendy up to date parents that use text and e-mail)... who reminded me that sometimes it helps to clear my mind of everything. I am forever thankful that I was taught to meditate and let myself be quiet - I just sometimes need to remember that I can do it by myself.

So I put the dogs to bed a little early, shut the cats out the bedroom and dug out my ear plugs and blindfoldy type sleep mask thing (mainly because my room is never completely dark thanks to the fact I've yet to find curtains that Hugo can't bring down within a couple of hours)....I managed to get myself to go under fairly quickly and the idea was that I would spend an hour or so just letting go, calming down and putting the stressy feelings behind me before I went to bed.

Well that was the plan, but I managed to send myself to sleep and was extremely disorientated when I was woken up by Ivan barking about 5 hours later (yep, he's loud enough to get through the ear plugs) ...... so much so that I slipped on my glasses and for a second thought I'd gone blind........... yup I was still wearing the sleep mask!!

I've spent the day mainly pottering around the house.... and erm, some time hoping around the kitchen as I managed to find the one tiny sliver of broken glass from last night and stand on it!   I've done some organising for work next week.... thankfully I am only in 3 days.......some cleaning, some baking and quite a lot of relaxing.  I've also been working on cat pacification.... I may not be forgiven for quite a while over shutting them out of the bedroom.  There has also been writing..... but not my LHNB story, oh no, a completely different set of characters ambushed me when I was in the shower this morning!

This evening I intend to have a nice tea and then relax some more.... with luck I will be so chilled out the next two days will fly past in a haze of relaxation!

Ivan, Kammi and Gretchen waiting not very patiently
for me to feed them (they aren't happy... the supermarket delivery
forgot their chicken wings!)

Can I cancel today and start again tomorrow??

Today is one of "those" days, you know the type, where everything you touch is going to explode on you (okay, that bit might just be me) for everyone else it's probably a day where absolutely nothing goes right.......

Yesterday, I finished a week that spiraled deeper into the 7th level of hell as it progressed, ending up not sure if I wanted to scream, shout, rant incoherently at people by e-mail or burst into tears......... I hate year end!  Anyway, the weekend was going to be better....... it had to be really....

So last night I had a quiet night of doing very little but chilling out and then had an early night........ or I would have done, but about an hour after I went to bed we were hit by a storm which battered the rain against the windows and sent the cats into stalk and destroy mode...... when they eventually settled down under the duvet purring their little heads off I was wide awake... joy!

Rent a mob went off at 4.40 am......... okay, only 20 minutes earlier than normal, but still, we had a quick meander to the park and they had breakfast before I tried to settle on the sofa to get a couple more hours sleep in ... well I've no idea what my next door neighbours were doing in the kitchen... but it sounded like trying to recreate the sounds of the percussion section of an orchestra using the kitchen cupboard doors.....

I gave up and got up properly, sorted laundry and got ready to go out when mum texted to remind me that I was due at hers at 1 pm for lunch......... dammit... I'd planned on laundry & coffee with mum then a run round the supermarket before home and writing........ I opened the lap top, looked at my story and my mind went walk about......

Lunch was, erm, interesting, mum was meant to be doing a stir fry, but had decided to try a frozen veg/noodles combo with marinated tofu........... the tofu was nice......... she did however make me pineapple upside down cake for pudding.

I went home via the supermarket.......... which is to say I drove in, looked at the heaving car park, the crowds going in and out, and promptly decided I couldn't face it and drove out again.  I tried a couple of smaller supermarkets, but apparently nothing on this earth was going to get me inside one of them today without a major shove from some external force or someone to physically dragging me around......... I went to the pet shop to make sure the critters were all catered for and then when I came home did an online shopping order to be delivered tomorrow afternoon.... (which also meant I had a wrap with peanut butter on it for tea.... yeah, not so good, but hey, you know....) .... obviously, I wish to be a hermit at present!

This evening I've mainly read, done a little writing................ and managed to smash my large pyrex mixing bowl into about a million glass fragments all over the kitchen floor........ which as that happened just after I'd put some hot milk on to heat on the hob for a hot chocolate meant that whilst I was frantically cleaning up the glass and trying to keep rent a mob from slicing their paws I managed to boil over the milk and burn the cooker top and the saucepan bottom.........

I am giving up now and going to lie in a darkened room whilst I wait for tomorrow in the hope that it will be a slightly better day!

Today I learnt....

That it is apparently World Penguin Day!

Who knew!

Today is apparently the day that they all head off in a northerly directions.... though how they know today is the day I don't know.... I mean, do they have a secret penguin calendar hidden about their person... or perhaps there is a penguin HQ that makes a formal announcement.... oh the theories I could come up with (yeah, I'm meant to be writing... but you know, easily sidetracked.... at least it was penguins tonight... unlike last night ... which we won't go into....ahem...)

I like penguins.... but no one will ever let me own one (mind you, they won't let me have a polar bear either.... tis just mean I say!)

So anyway have some penguins..........

Call that a blog post..........

I seem to be living in front of a computer screen at present.

Work remains stupidly busy and I am spending around 8 hours a day at my desk drafting documents and dealing with e-mails ... with occasional breaks to take phone calls.... then when I get home there is a quick sort out of the dogs and a brief run around the block before I settle down in front of the lap top, usually for around a further 4 hours as I try to write this story (which is now at least happening.... okay so at present it's a whole set of different scenes which will hopefully join up to make a proper story........ I may need to employ some form of magic to get this to happen though!)

All this means I have no inspiration, or in fact life, to blog about.... even the critters are being careful not to do anything to annoy me............ I do have a vast amount of chocolate though thanks to a wonderful friend who also believes in the powers of the substance to relieve stress, provide inspiration and make the world a better place....

Normal service........ i.e. inane waffling .... will probably resume in a week or so......provided I don't lose the plot completely and turn into a jibbering wreck by then...........

The weekend... in numbers....again

... because I am still overtired (okay, read on, this time it might be my own fault)...

1. Thursday and Friday at work I was hoping to slack off a little as neither my team leader or my boss was in the office........ okay, yes, that didn't happen.... I forgot I had team leader duties in their absence and we have a new starter that needs supervising.... also with the time of year I got not only my own e-mails demanding the impossible but my team leader's too...... roll on 30th April..

2. Sometime halfway through Friday one of my oldest friends (we shared a house at university *mumble*20 years ago*mumble*) reminded me that she was coming to visit on Saturday and we decided that she would make it an over night visit.  Now this friend and I shared a house for 4 years, in fact at one point for about 4 months we shared a room in her aunt's house whilst we (the three dogs, cat, 2 rats and 2 gerbils) were temporarily homeless and although we only see each other every 4 months or so we still speak or text nearly every day, but it's rare we get a proper long catch up so this was a fantastic idea.....

3. ... until I remembered the state of my house......... okay, she's not the most fastidious housekeeper herself, but even though I know she wouldn't mind of the house was a little untidy I won't let people in when it isn't what I consider to be properly clean and tidy.......... cue Saturday morning's battle of the dust bunnies........ okay, these were no ordinary dust bunnies... these were dust bunnies with attitude... they'd set up a breeding colony under the sofa and it took a fearless warrior to defeat them and cart their remains through the hoover to the black bin bag of doom..........  Actually it wasn't that bad, but having dogs that moult, if you don't stay on top of the hoovering then I swear eventually what gathers under the sofa will evolve into it's own life form... probably in my case some sort of dustically modified spitz....  thank goodness for naked cats, upstairs took me less than half the cleaning time....  mind you that could have been because a lot of downstairs cleaning time was spent stroking the sofa cushions whilst wearing a fetching pair of bright pink latex gloves.... who says I don't know how to have fun!

4.  My friend arrived shortly before 2 pm......... complete with her 6 dogs (I thought there were 5, but I'd forgotten one)... luckily her dogs get on brilliantly with mine and a mass playtime took place... which mainly involved Ivan flirting wildly with her two boys (he's of the opinion that bitches are scary).

5. Vodka was consumed.......... this is kind of a tradition now.... we had my rhubarb vodka with cream soda .... very nice combination, tastes like old fashioned rhubarb & custard sweets .... and she'd bought some raspberry vodka which we had with lemonade..... we chilled out, nattered..... we stayed up far too late

6.  I am very tired today..........my friend left early afternoon and I headed off to do laundry and get some bits from the shop for the week......... now I am home, my critters are exhausted and I am not much better.  I have plans to write this evening, but I think a short afternoon nap may be called for first.

7.  I don't want to go to work tomorrow............

Reading rut..............

Hmmmm, it appears that my reading mojo is MIA...... was it stolen? or did it wander off by itself into the
books gathering dust...
never a good thing
back of the Kindle never to return again?

This is not something that happens to me..... sure the draw to things like knitting, baking, writing etc comes and goes, but reading, nope, don't think that's happened before.  Books are the one solid thing in my life that I can always come back to whether it's to hide, escape, learn or just enjoy.

I thought it was a genre thing, I was just getting over saturated with the whole M/M genre (which in itself contains so many sub-genres I should be happy right?) ... so I switched off and tried to read other genres.......nope didn't make a difference..........I switched from the Kindle to real books......... again, no difference.  I look at the to read list and the books waiting to be read (hey it was my birthday and my family haven't got the hang of Amazon voucher yet so there was real books) and have absolutely no feeling but "meh"... normally new books mean itching to get started.

I can re-read old favourites - M/M and other genres....in the last week I've been for a hike round the ranch,  travelled around the Disc, I've had some action adventure moments, dabbled in crime and flitted in and out of 13th century Wales..... fine, I can do this, but anything new, nope.... my brain shuts down and goes off to do other things........ I wouldn't mind if it was doing something remotely useful but really, it's even contemplated dog grooming and housework!

I feel that my reading mojo needs to be hunted down, caught and returned to me asap..... before it gets like my work ethic and motivation and thinks it can just bugger off on it's own whenever it feels like it!
